💧 Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal

Objective of the Scheme

The primary objective of the Jal Jeevan Mission is to provide a Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC), ensuring a reliable and adequate supply of potable water, to every rural household in India by 2024.

The mission aims for ‘Har Ghar Jal’ (Water in Every Home).

Who is Eligible?

The JJM is not a scheme that citizens apply for individually; it is an infrastructure development mission covering the entire village.

• Eligibility: All households within the limits of Petgaon Gram Panchayat are eligible to receive an FHTC.

• Focus: Priority is often given to schools, Anganwadi centers, health centers, and community buildings to ensure public access first.

Benefits Provided

• Tap Connection: Provision of a functioning tap connection inside the household premises.

• Water Quantity: Supply of drinking water at the prescribed rate of 55 Liters Per Capita Per Day (LPCD).

• Water Quality: Assurance of potable (drinkable) water supply, with mandatory testing at the village level.

• Improved Life: Significant reduction in the time and effort traditionally spent by women and girls in fetching water.

Application / Participation Process

JJM is a community-driven scheme, and the Gram Panchayat plays a central role.

1. Community Participation: The scheme is planned, implemented, and managed at the village level by the Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC) or Paani Samiti, which is a sub-committee of the Gram Panchayat.

2. Demand & Contribution: Households often need to contribute a small percentage (usually 5% in general areas like Maharashtra) towards the capital cost of the scheme to ensure community ownership.

3. Local Connection: Households must contact the Paani Samiti or Gram Panchayat to participate in the local water supply scheme’s planning and to ensure their house is included in the connection pipeline layout.

4. Testing: Citizens can participate in water quality testing using Field Test Kits (FTKs) provided at the village level.
